Mt Rainier #1
Oil on Art Board   6 1/2 x 8 1/2
Eliza Barchus painted Mt. Rainier almost as often as Mt. Hood and Mt. Shasta. These three mountains were her bread-and-butter paintings and created in ‘potboiler’ fashion. This was not unlike other artists who needed to make a living selling what the tourist desired. For example, California’s Thomas Hill (1829 – 1908) created many similar versions of Yosemite Valley, Alaska’s Sydney Laurence (1865 – 1940) frequently painted Mt. McKinley and Eliza’s teacher, William Parrott, produced a significant body of Mt. Hood works.
