Cape Horn and Cigar Rock
Oil on Board 10 x 5
The reverse of this painting is stamped 145 1/2 Third St., Portland, Oregon, which was Mrs. Barchus’ first studio location and dates the work to between 1886 and 1893. Cape Horn is on the north (Washington) side of the Columbia River a few miles downstream from Beacon Rock. Since this was a remote location at the time it was painted, she may have travelled by steamer ship to arrive at this destination. This rock formation is now inside the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. The area is more accessible since a 7.5 mile hiking trail was developed in the early 2000’s.
