Wrought Iron Easel (1890’s)

Easel

This 8 1/2 foot tall easel was acquired by Barchus in the early 1890’s. Over the years she sold her painting with various concessionaires at different locations throughout the area. One of the first was Mr. B. B. Rich who operated a shop in the elaborate Portland Hotel after it was built in 1890. This easel could accommodate Barchus’ largest size paintings – 40″ x 60,” and many were sold off this easel. In image above, a 22″ x 36″ Barchus painting of Yosemite is almost too small to fit on the easel pegs. The image entitled Photograph – Art Collection Sold!, located elsewhere in this website, documents the easel in the Barchus family home in 1977.
