Barchus visited Skagway, Alaska in the summer of 1913. However, few paintings of Alaska scenery have surfaced over the years so one is lead to believe that the northern scenery did not appeal to her. Barchus lodged at the Golden North Hotel which was built in 1898 and still operates as a hotel.  She offered painting classes at the hotel during her stay. The September 14, 1914 Sunday Oregonian (Portland. Oregon) announced: “Mrs Eliza R. Barchus has returned from a trip to Alaska.”
