Land Bridge, Virginia
Oil on Canvas   36 x 22
There is no record that Barchus visited this natural wonder in the state of Virginia, although it’s possible when she traveled to New York in 1890 to exhibit at the National Academy of Design. Highly more likely is that she produced this painting from an illustration. The source may have been from the July 10, 1893 issue of the National Geographic Magazine which included an article about this rock formation, with an accompanying illustration that resembles this painting, including the small gazebo located at the top right of bridge. (Information courtesy of Virgina Historical Society.)
