Crater Lake: Crater Lake #1

Oil on Canvas * 12 x 18

Barchus primarily painted two versions of what is now Oregon’s only National Park. This version, with the intricate foreground of lake-rim boulders and weathered fir trees, is the earlier of the two compositions. It is similar to a lithograph of Crater Lake she produced for sale at the Lewis and Clark Exposition that was held in Portland in 1905 (See Postcard – Crater Lake (1905)). She also reproduced this version in her brochure Ideal Glimpses of Picturesque as Portrayed on Canvas by an Oregon Artist, which was also produced as a souvenir for Oregon Lewis and Clark Exposition visitors. (See Picturesque Oregon Booklet (1905).) She later painted the lake with a foreground with more trees and fewer rocks. (see Crater Lake: Crater Lake #2.)
