Golden Gate, San Francisco #1

An extant title plate, that likely accommodated a large 40″ x 60″ painting (See Painting Title Plates – Wood), indicates that Mrs. Barchus painted the entrance to San Francisco Bay early in her painting career though no examples have been documented until this small painting was discovered. In the artist’s hand, the reverse is pencil inscribed: Golden Gate, Cal. Based on information provided by Agnes Barchus, daughter of Eliza Barchus and author of a biography book about her mother, this painting would have been created sometime after 1910.
