Golden Gate, San Francisco #2

This painting is labeled in ink on the stretcher Marine at Pont (sic) Loma, Calif but NOT in the artist’s handwriting. A Los Angeles Times clipping dated Dec 23, 1894, mentions an exhibition of Barchus paintings in the city and references one painting with this title. Under the caption of Grandeur of Nature, is written (in part): ‘A large number of this lady’s latest works of art have just arrived, and are being daily examined by all lovers of the beautiful and realistic. The paintings are mostly scenes of California, among them being the “Wood Scene” in Sonoma Creek; “A Marine” at Point Loma, San Diego County; “Pyramid Lake” at Sunset, Nev.; “Arch Rock” Mendocino coast; “San Antonio Canyon, with Old Baldy in the Distance,” and many others as equally charming. These paintings were being exhibited at the art emporium of H. C. Lichtenberger.’ Due to this information, it was previously thought that this canvas portrayed this scene.
However, a small painting depicting Golden Gate, San Francisco was recently discovered which is titled in pencil and in the artist’s handwriting. Comparing the two paintings provide convincing evidence that both paintings are of the same coastal shoreline – that of San Francisco, not Los Angeles.
