Muir Glacier, Alaska

Mrs. Barchus visited Juneau and Skagway, Alaska in the summer of 1913. (The September 14, 1913, Sunday Oregonian announced: “Mrs. Eliza R. Barchus has returned from a trip to Alaska.”) She arranged for the W.H Case Art Store to handle her paintings in both cities. However, few paintings of Alaska scenery have surfaced over the years so one is led to believe that the northern scenery did not sell well with the public. In Skagway, Barchus lodged at the Golden North Hotel which was built in 1898 and still operates as a hotel. She offered painting classes at the hotel during her stay.
