Portrait of Artist – Age ~40-41

This portrait of Eliza must have been a favorite of hers as she used it in her advertising materials throughout her career. The exact date she sat for this picture is not known but it was most likely ca. 1898 – 1890. The photographer was Parker Studio in Baker, Oregon, a town that she visited at that time to teach classes in painting. In the fall of 1887, she won a gold medal at the Portland Mechanics Fair. It is that medal Barchus is wearing on the ribbon necklace. The dime-size medal is extant and still retains the gold heart attached to it.
