The story behind the painting is told in Agnes Barchus’ biography of her mother. A larger version of this painting, which had the given title of Piru Canyon, was consigned to a Los Angeles art dealer. The dealer promptly renamed it Home of Ramona, after an imaginary location of a recently published novel. Piru Canyon is about 50 miles north of Los Angeles.
