Multnomah Falls #4

Oil on Art Board * 8 x 4

This early painting of Multnomah Falls has a funny story to it. Peggy & Harold Samuels, authors of an encyclopedia of early American artists, purchased the painting directly from Agnes Barchus during the period they were conducting research for their future book. At some point they must have lost track of which waterfall was depicted as in the book (Samuels’ Encyclopedia of Artists of the American West, second printing published 1985), the painting is illustrated with the title of “Yosemite Falls, Yellowstone.” And upon personal inspection of the painting in the mid-1990’s, they had affixed a title plate to the painting with that same location. Thus, this is the only waterfall that is in three U.S. states – Oregon, California and Wyoming!
