Eliza Barchus Exhibition Records

The list below includes all documented public venues where Eliza Barchus paintings have been exhibited for public view. Most entries are of art exhibitions, but a few are listed when paintings were loaned to a significant public place where Barchus was being honored for her artistic talent / legacy.

In 1890, Barchus sent a painting to New York City to be exhibited at the National Academy of Design’s Annual Autumn exhibition. This was a major achievement, as few artists from Oregon had previously been represented at this premier venue, with Barchus being the first documented Oregon woman artist. (Josephine Hayne exhibiting at the Academy in 1897 which may have been the second Oregon woman artist.)

Over the years, Barchus has been honored with at least six one-person shows. The first, and only one that occurred during the artist’s lifetime, was in 1931, which she self-promoted near the end of her career and included 35 works. That was followed in 1972 when the Oregon Society of Artists held a show, with the assistance of Agnes Barchus, that included 18 paintings. Soon after this show, Agnes sold the family painting collection. More recent one-person shows have occurred at the Portland, Oregon, Chamber of Commerce Building in 1983, at the Kirkland House Museum, Walla Walla, Washington in 2010, and two shows at the Pittock Mansion, Portland, Oregon in 2002 and in 2023-34. The latter show at the Pittock Mansion included over 65 Barchus paintings!
