Timeline of Barchus Residences & Art Studios
Upon arriving in Portland, Oregon, in early 1880’s, Eliza originally rented an apartment in the city’s core commercial district for about 10 years. This location first served as domestic living space but later as studio space as she started to develop her art career. This was a second-floor location at 145 1/2 East Third Street, near Alder Street. Around 1893 she acquired property on the east side of Portland, in what is now inner southeast, and built would ultimately six homes in this area, four of which are still in use. Based on dated documents, we can trace when she lived at each location. This is sometimes helpful in determining a painting’s age since she seldom dated her work but sometimes indicated her address on the reverse of the artwork.
Images of each house that Barchus had built are located elsewhere in the Ephemera Index of this website [Link to webpage].
