Unknown (Winter)

Winter, a rare snow scene by Barchus, portrays a cold, still winter day. The viewer is drawn into the canvas by the narrowing of the lake into the middle distance, where a raven in flight captures your attention. This painting was included in Barchus’ one-person show held in conjunction with the 1931 Pacific International Livestock Exposition (Portland, Oregon). Photographs from that exhibition indicate that this painting won a ribbon, either at this show or, more likely, at some previous venue.
