In addition to painting beautiful scenic mountains, Mrs. Barchus mastered the idyllic qualities of still waters. The lake in these nearly identical paintings, with mossy rocks and bank edges filled with reeds, captures a quiet moment in nature as the sunset begins to close the day, one painting depicting just the beginning of day’s end and the other when it is well underway. The lower painting has a Barchus label affixed to the stretcher bar indicating the painting was created in 1915. It is also marked with Joe Erdelac’s “JME” monogram, indicating that this is one of the many paintings he acquired from Agnes Barchus in the 1970’s. Due to their similarity, both paintings were likely painted at the same time.
