Studio Advertisement Card (1898)

Eliza R. Barchus - 1890’s Advertising Card

This small paper advertising item can be dated to 1898 as that was the only year Mrs. Barchus referred to her studio in downtown Portland as being in the Multnomah Block. She taught art lessons for several years, with her most notable student being Howard Sewall (1899-1975). Sewall’s work is represented in the collection of Timberline Lodge, Mt. Hood. It is interesting that she chose to illustrate on this advertisement a marine scene of a sale boat moored on the beach as such a composition was not representative of her typical body of work.
