Portland Blue Book (1901)

1901 Portland Directory

The 1901 Portland Blue Book holds a mystery. In this edition of this annual publication Barchus had a full page advertisement. In it she promotes herself by noting that she exhibited her Mt. Hood painting at the National Academy of Design 9th Annual Exhibition (1890). She also states that her painting of Mt. Corcoran was exhibited in the National Academy’s 17th (1899) annual show. A search of National Academy of Design exhibition records do support the Mt. Hood painting being exhibited but not a Mt. Corcoran. Since the 1901 directory would have gone to print by 1900, is it possible that Barchus planned to exhibit at the National Academy a second time but at the last minute, after she had submitted her advertisement to the printer, changed her mind?
