Unfinished Paintings of Mt Hood

Eliza R. Barchus - Unfinished Multnomah Falls Paintings

It is not clear why these would-be paintings of Mt. Hood were never finished. Based on the artist’s paper label on the reverse, they were created circa 1902 – 1906, well before she ended her career in the mid 1930s.  However, they give proof that she painted multiple examples of the same scene in assembly line fashion to create sufficient inventory for her thriving tourist trade. The label lists several standard subjects which Eliza would paint in given sizes at set prices. The smallest size noted is 6 1/2″ x 8 1/2,” which sold for the predetermined prices of $3.50. These four paintings are smaller – only 5 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ – and would have sold for less. In today’s market, if finished, they would sell for several hundred dollars.
